Summer Bucket List: The Twin Cities’ Events and Experiences Worth Getting Out of the House For!
If you’ve lived in Minnesota for more than one winter, you understand the unspoken agreement we all make: survive January, and summer will make it worth it. Once June arrives, it feels like the entire Twin Cities comes alive. Patios fill up, bikes come out of storage, every weekend somehow has three festivals happening at once. Suddenly everyone remembers how much they love being outside! The challenge isn’t finding something to do—it’s deciding what not to do.
If you’re looking to make the most of summer in the Twin Cities, here are a few events, traditions, and local favorites that deserve a spot on your calendar!
Spend a Day Around the Lakes
It sounds obvious, but there’s a reason locals never get tired of the lakes. Whether you’re walking around Lake Harriet, paddleboarding on Bde Maka Ska, or grabbing ice cream after a bike ride around Lake of the Isles, the Minneapolis lakes are one of the city’s greatest assets. Even longtime residents find themselves rediscovering them every summer!
If you’re entertaining visitors from out of town, this is usually one of the first places you’ll take them. Check out Minneapolis Parks for additional info!
Walk Across the Stone Arch Bridge
The Stone Arch Bridge is one of those places that somehow never gets old. The views of the Mississippi River, the skyline, and St. Anthony Main are hard to beat! This is a perfect addition to an itinerary including a visit to the Mill City Museum, a show at the Guthrie Theater, or dinner at one of Minneapolis’ fantastic restaurants.
And don’t forget to bookmark your calendar for next year – the annual Stone Arch Bridge Festival turns the riverfront into a celebration of local artists, food vendors, and live music. Even if you’re not shopping for artwork, it’s worth going just to soak in the atmosphere.
Go to Aquatennial at Least Once
July 16-25, 2026
Every city has that one event that feels uniquely its own. In Minneapolis, that’s the Aquatennial. For several days each July, downtown fills with live music, food, events, and one of the biggest fireworks shows of the year. If you’ve never experienced Aquatennial, put it on your list. There’s a reason people keep coming back each summer!
Take Advantage of Free Outdoor Entertainment
One of the best things about summer in the Twin Cities is how much you can do without spending a lot of money. Parks throughout Minneapolis-St. Paul host outdoor movie nights, concerts, and community events all summer long. Bring a lawn chair, grab takeout from a nearby restaurant, and you’ve got a perfect summer evening. Some of the most memorable nights aren’t the expensive ones, they’re the random Wednesday evenings spent listening to live music in a park.
Check out the Meet Minneapolis Calendar for your next movie night or live music!
Don’t Skip the Neighborhood Festivals
The big festivals get the headlines, but some of the most enjoyable summer weekends happen at neighborhood events. Nokomis Days, PAN-O-PROG, Open Streets, community art fairs, farmers markets, and local celebrations offer a chance to explore parts of the Twin Cities you might not otherwise visit. Our neighborhoods have such distinct personalities! Be sure to check our incredible Farmers’ Markets!
Enjoy Patio Season While It Lasts
Minnesotans wait all year for patio season, and when it arrives, we take it seriously. Whether it’s brunch on a sunny Saturday morning, happy hour after work, or dinner outside with friends, summer is the time to take advantage of the Twin Cities’ incredible restaurant scene. Because let’s be honest: in six months we’ll be eating indoors while checking the weather every fifteen minutes. Minneapolis-St. Paul’s Best Patio Dining info found here!
Make Plans for the Great Minnesota Get-Together – The Minnesota State Fair!!

And yes, you’ll probably eat somethingserved on a stick. It’s still worth it. For many Minnesotans, the State Fair isn’t just an event, it is the unofficial finale to summer.
