Summer Plans? How About Traveling Abroad!

by Genni Schroepfer

Traveling abroad is a great way to explore new places, meet interesting people, and experience different cultures. It’s not just about seeing new sights—it’s about broadening your horizons and creating memories that last a lifetime. With summer on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about any trips you’d like to embark on, especially international travel!

My mom and I recently traveled to Thailand to visit some family who have moved there. While the trip required a lot of planning and forethought, the experience was well worth it.

Planning for Oversees Travel

Every country has its own unique culture, food, and traditions. Whether
you’re tasting street food in Thailand, learning about history in Italy, or listening to a new language, international travel helps you see the world from a fresh perspective. As such, it is important to learn as much as you can about the culture of the place you are visiting, as to make sure you are being respectful of the people who live there.

For example, we bought books, downloaded language-learning apps, and asked people about their firsthand experiences. Some of my personal favorite books about traveling to Thailand, as well as a language app, are:

  • Lonely Planet Thailand (Travel Guide) by Lonely Planet, China Williams, Tim Bewer, et al.
  • Top 10 Bangkok by DK Travel
  • Google Translate app  (I downloaded Thai)
    • I would suggest downloading the desired language for offline usage so as to not use too much cellular data when translating on-the-go

Important International Travel Resources

Another essential part of traveling abroad is knowing what travel documents are required for entry to a foreign country. You do not want to show up at your departure airport without your passport and necessary travel documents in hand, nor be missing these documents as you go through customs in another country. Some countries require visas for American travelers, while others do not, so be sure to check.

An excellent resource for those planning international travel is USA.gov. This website is a great place to check visa requirements for US citizens traveling abroad, ensure your passport is valid, apply for an International Driver’s License if you plan to drive in-country, as well as learn about any travel advisories issued by the State Department and whether or not there are recommended vaccinations.

As for our travel to Thailand, my mom and I acquired a visa that allowed us to stay up to 60 days.

Sightseeing

Sightseeing is when the fun begins! Lucky for us, my mom and I had the privilege of having our very own tour guides—my cousins! They had lots they wished to show us, including local restaurants, nightlife, and markets. From the vibrant night markets to hiking up mountains to seven-story malls, Thailand has it all. Traveling to this country was such a diverse experience and went well beyond my original expectations. Have you been? Reach out to me! In fact, many of our Realtors love to travel! We’d love to compare notes!

Even if you don’t have a personal connection to someone who lives in the country you plan to explore, there is still a wealth of resources to help you plan your itinerary. Browse the travel section at your local bookstore to find the perfect guidebook, read travel blogs, and ask for firsthand recommendations and tips from friends and family if they have traveled to your destination. Even for college students, there are many opportunities to travel on a budget and even study abroad. Traveling abroad is an enriching life experience and something I highly recommend!
